Description:

Periodontology is a medical subdiscipline whose objective is the scientific study and clinical application of the pathology and pathophysiology of the periodontium; the latter constitutes, from the morpho-functional aspect, the tooth-supporting structures. The manifestations of this pathology have been described under a large number of names. At present they are called 'periodontal diseases' in languages with an Anglo-Saxon base, and 'parodontopathies' in those of Latin origin.
Many textbooks especially devoted to the clinical aspects of periodontology are entitled 'Periodontics', and sometimes 'Periodontia' .
